Something That You Should Know About Prostate Cancer.
The prostate is a small, walnut-sized structure that makes up part of a man's reproductive system; it wraps around the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body - because of this can cause various urinary problems. Early prostate cancer is confined to the prostate gland itself; most of the patients with this type of cancer can live for years without any problems. Detected in its early stages, prostate cancer can be effectively treated and cured.
The job of the prostate gland is to produce fluid which forms part of semen and helps to nourish sperm. The prostate gland sits in front of the back passage or "rectum" which is why if a doctor wants to examine the prostate gland they feel it by putting a finger into your back passage. This is also called a "digital rectal examination" or DRE for short. From feeling the prostate gland the doctor can tell how enlarged the gland is and whether it feels normal or cancerous, this can then provide a picture of prostate cancer if it exists.
If you are below they age of 50, you are extremely unlikely to have it. Simple as that, and the information leads to the best preventative: regular screening after age 50. In addition to age, there is a genetic risk as well.
Because prostate cancer symptoms can mimic other diseases or disorders, men who experience any of these symptoms should undergo a thorough work-up to determine the underlying cause of the symptoms. Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease are bone pain or tenderness, and abdominal pain. Other symptoms might include unintentional weight loss and lethargy.
The cause of prostate cancer is not known. What is known is the characteristics of those men who tend to develop prostate problems. These are known as "risk factors" i.e. men with these characteristics are at greater risk of developing the cancer. However it is important to realise that ALL men are at risk of prostate cancer and even young men who have no history of cancer in their family can develop prostate cancer.
All this is well and good to know, but it doesn't do you any good if you can't control it, does it?
The approaches to treatment include: just ever watchful waiting to see whether the cancer is growing slowly and not causing any symptoms. An oncologist, a cancer specialist, will usually recommend treating with a single drug or a combination of drugs. What you can do now is begin to understand what exactly your treatment options are and where you're going to begin.
Hormones
How about location in the world?
Treatment options can vary based on the stage of the tumor. Other medications used for hormonal therapy, with side effects, include androgen-blocking agents, which prevent testosterone from attaching to prostate cells. Be aware that some men chose natural treatment options and forgo any surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.
Prostate cancer is seen more commonly in certain ethnic groups e.g. African-Americans.
A recently completed study showed the surprising fact that men who have had diabetes for several years have a significantly reduced chance of getting prostate cancer (American Journal of Epidemiology 2005 161(2);147-152).
Get familiar with juicing and juice every day for an extra phytonutrient boost. If you're not already doing so, make a serious effort to watch your diet closely. A good dietary, natural treatment approach is to avoid all acidic inflammatory foods; those are foods that aren't alive.
Genetic
Age. That's it. Age is the only reliable cause of prostate cancer. All the others are only potential risk factors that are still too early in their stages of study to know exactly what do about them or what they mean. When you get old your skin wrinkles, you get arthritis, and you get prostate cancer. It's simply a fact of life.
